At my house it seems like all I do is go around turning off the lights. The people living in my house (mostly teenagers) seemed to be hardwired to turn lights on but they never turn them off, it drives me crazy. Month after month I get sticker shock from the amount of the electric bill. Then just last month I received a letter from the Office of Consumer Advocate; it states, “The electric company has filed a request with the Public Utility Commission to increase the level of rates for providing electric distribution service to its customers. As part of this increase the electric company is proposing to raise the monthly residential customer charge from $9.99 to $17.10.” Electricity is very expensive now, and it is about to get even more expensive.
Just how expensive is electricity? Last month I examined my electric bill and when I added in all the various fees (there are a lot of fees) and the customer charge, and the power charge and the distribution charge, etc… The rate turned out to be .1364kWh. Now consider that it takes 27kWh to equal the energy output of one gallon of propane. That means that electricity at the rate of .1364kWh is equivalent to $3.68 per gallon of propane. Now consider that propane is selling for less than $2.00 a gallon and if you wanted to, you could lock in a rate of less than $2.00 a gallon for the winter time. Just think if the PUC approves the electric companies rate increase will make electric equivalent to propane $4.31. Like I said, electricity is expensive energy.
Now, if you are using electricity to heat your home, heat your hot water, cook your food, or to space heat smaller areas in your home, you are paying a huge premium to the electric company to do so. Consider using propane for any or all of those needs and more. Propane is very versatile. It can be used to power many things including a refrigerator or a standby generator to provide electricity when the aging electric power grid fails. One last thing, if you heat your home with heating oil, you can smile too. It takes 41kWh to equal the energy output of one gallon of heating oil, that means if you heat your home with electricity your spending equivalent of $6.54 per gallon to do so. Like I said, electricity is expensive.
